About Me
I design things. My specialty is in designing websites (front-end and user interface, though I’m a dab hand with XHTML and CSS). I’ve also done quite a few logos and business cards as they come up. I like to take photos in my spare time, and make t-shirt designs for CafePress. I love clean, sleek design that’s easy to use and understand. I also really enjoy mid-century modern design and illustration. I’m a quick learner, and pick up new skills with every job I do.

Me and Design
I started to mess around with computer design in 1998, when I started a condensed (3 years’ classes in 2 years) program for Multimedia Productions. I learned the basics of a variety of media production types: web design, graphic design, audio and video production, authoring, 3D modeling, and mass communications. Through those two years, I found that my favorite type of design was definitely for websites and online graphics.
Since then I’ve done a lot of different types of design: logos, websites, t-shirts, and CD cover art. I’ve also dabbled in digital illustration, taking pictures for people, and in photo editing. I’ve even designed a few skins for my sims. My favorites are still web site front-end design and web graphic creation, but I enjoy doing a bit of everything.
Technical Skills
Photoshop
I’m Great
I’ve been working with Photoshop since version 5 (in 1998), and am currently working with Photoshop CS. This is definitely the program I’m best with, and I use it for designing all my layouts, creating graphics, and photo editing.
HTML
I’m Great
I’ve been writing HTML by hand since 1998. I prefer to code in
TextPad, though Notepad does the trick in a pinch. I’ve also used Dreamweaver for speeding up the site-making process when it helped speed things up, and really enjoyed working with it.
Layouts
I’m Great
I love to design web layouts, and have been at it for a long time now. I usually create the layout in its entirety in Photoshop, then chop up the graphics to whatever pieces are needed and work them in to the HTML and CSS code. I have used Adobe ImageReady to do my graphic chopping, but prefer to do it by hand in Photoshop to give me a more control.
Illustrator
I’m Good
I’ve been using Illustrator for quite a few years now as well, but not as often as Photoshop. I mostly use it for logo design, but have also done a few illustrations and a few graphics for Flash use.
CSS
I’m Good
I’ve been coding CSS since 2008, and really like the code’s flexibility and easy integration with HTML. I can get CSS to do whatever it needs to. And if I don’t know a tag, I google it up until I do.
CMS
I’m Learning
I’ve worked with several Content Management Systems, for varying companies: Joomla, WordPress, Website Baker, and Dot Net Nuke (DNN). I’ve added and formatted content for these sites, and have also installed CMSes, plugins, modules, and themes/templates.
CMS Design
I’m Learning
I designed a Dot Net Nuke (DNN) skin for the Dueck Brothers website and a Website Baker skin when working for EventIQ. I’ve been editing Joomla templates and WordPress themes lately, and plan on creating my own as time allows.
PHP
I’ve used a bit
I’ve gone through a few tutorials on programming in PHP. I’ve created a few simple database-driven sites (like my
Recipe Trove), but found that programming is an art best left to those who love it. When I worked for
EventIQ I did most of the design work, and added my HTML/CSS/Javascript into the PHP where needed to make their websites prettier.
Javascript
I’ve used a bit
I know my way around Javascript well enough to find scripts to suit my needs, then do a bit of tailoring here and there to get the look or functionality needed.
Video Editing
I’ve done a bit
I like to play around with video editing in my spare time. I’ve made a few short (5 minutes) videos and a 30-minute DVD using footage I’ve taken with my digital camera. I’ve been using Movie Edit Pro at home, since Windows Movie Maker didn’t have the capabilities to do what I needed it to. I worked with Adobe Premiere in college, and really enjoyed it.
Other
I’ve done a bit
- Adobe ImageReady
- Flash – simple menus
and animations
- 3D Studio Max – some modelling in college
- Macromedia Director – in college
